Free-free Emission at Low Radio Frequencies

چکیده
We discuss free-free radio emission from ionized gas in the intergalactic medium. Because the emissivity is proportional to the square of the electron density, the mean background is strongly sensitive to the spatial clumping of free electrons. Using several existing models for the clumping of ionized gas, we find that the expected free-free distortion to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) blackbody spectrum is at a level detectable with upcoming experiments such as the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission (ARCADE). However, the dominant contribution to the distortion comes from clumpy gas at z ∼< 3, and the integrated signal does not strongly constrain the epoch of reionization. In addition to the mean emission, we consider spatial fluctuations in the free-free background and the extent to which these anisotropies confuse the search for fluctuations in 21 cm line emission from neutral hydrogen during and prior to reionization. This background is smooth in frequency space and hence can be removed through frequency differencing, but only so long as the 21 cm signal and the free-free emission are uncorrelated. We show that, because the free-free background is generated primarily at low redshifts, the cross-correlation between the two fields is smaller than a few percent. Thus, multifrequency cleaning should be an effective way to eliminate the free-free confusion. Subject headings: cosmic microwave background — large scale structure of Universe — diffuse radiation

The Solar Atmosphere at Radio Wavelengths
We briefly review the status of radio observations of the solar atmosphere with an emphasis on relevance to stellar observations. 1. Radio Emission Mechanisms Solar radio observations are sensitive to virtually every feature of the solar atmosphere, covering a temperature range from the temperature minimum (5000 K) up to the soft Xray-emitting plasma produced by solar flares (> 107 K) and the m...
متن کاملModeling the spectral energy distribution of ULIRGs I: the radio spectra
Aims. We aim to constrain new starburst/AGN models of IRAS bright galaxies via their spectral energy distribution from the nearinfrared to the radio. To this end, we determine the radio spectra for a sample of 31 luminous and ultraluminous IRAS galaxies (LIRGs/ULIRGs). Methods. We present here new high frequency VLA observations at 22.5 GHz and 8.4 GHz and also derive fluxes at other radio freq...
متن کاملSearching for pulsed emission from XTE J0929–314 at high radio frequencies
Aims. The aim of this work is to search for radio signals in the quiescent phase of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, in this way giving an ultimate proof of the recycling model, thereby unambiguously establishing that accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are the progenitors of radio millisecond pulsars. Methods. To overcome the possible free-free absorption caused by matter surrounding accre...

W51 is a giant radio complex lying along the tangent to the Saggitarius arm at a distance of about 7kpc from Sun, with an extension of about 1◦ in the sky. It is divided into three components A,B,C where W51A and W51B are regions consisting of many compact HII sources. We have made continuum radio observations of these HII regions of W51 complex at 240,610,1060,1400 MHz frequencies using GMRT. متن کاملMultifrequency Analysis of 21 Cm Fluctuations from the Era of Reionization
We study the prospects for extracting detailed statistical properties of the neutral Hydrogen distribution during the era of reionization using the brightness temperature fluctuations from redshifted 21 cm line emission. Detection of this signal is complicated by contamination from foreground sources such as diffuse Galactic synchrotron and free-free emission at low radio frequencies, extragala...
